Overview
As part of Redback Racing, UNSW’s Formula SAE team, I designed the 2025 steering wheel PCB end-to-end. I brought the board from schematic through to validated, race-ready hardware.
What I did
Led discussions with drivers and vehicle dynamics engineers to define five key improvement areas. Designed a 4-layer PCB in Altium around an STM32 microcontroller to address these improvements, incorporating LED controls and a 4-position switch. The new PCB was retrofitted into the existing steering wheel housing to minimise redesign cost and manufacturing time. I then completed a full BOM and cost breakdown, and developed the C++ firmware in STM32CubeIDE.
Outcome
Delivered a 0% PCB failure rate across the full season of testing through validation and debugging, and the team placed 2nd in the Engineering Design Event.
